Coach - Should I hire one?
A Career Coach
can be a very effective resource for you in a job search campaign,
particularly if you respond well to having a third party professional
keep you on track and hold you accountable for your stated
job search objectives and activities.
You definitely want to select a career coach who has experience in JOB SEARCH coaching. One who understands your industry would also be advantageous, though industry specialty is less important.
Career Coaches generally charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $75 to $200 per hour. A higher rate does not necessarily translate into a "better" coach, but is usually indicative of the level of individual coached (i.e., executives versus lower level management). You will likely spend, on average, two to four hours per month with a coach, depending upon your needs and situation.
When selecting a coach, you want to choose a professional with whom you can "connect" and whose style and personality mesh well with yours. I recommend that you interview several (at least three). Also, ask for and contact previous client references. Feedback and comments from previous clients will give you excellent insight into the effectiveness of the coach.
A checklist of items to consider when choosing a Career Coach:
(1) Good personality
fit with yours
(2) Excellent client
references
(3) Experience in
job search coaching
(4) Charges by the hour at a rate consistent
with your level
